From 1914 Survage effected stays in Nice and began his famous Rose Period, the highest point of his career, which lasted until the end of the first war.
In Nice, Survage is surprised by the flight of seagulls that enter the city, thanks to this simple anecdote that the bird became one of its main pictorial themes.

Our painting is part of a small series of 13 works of this period.
