Old postcard of rue du Poteau in Paris
Maurice Utrillo was born on December 26, 1883, the day after Christmas, at No. 8 Rue du Poteau in Montmartre, between rue Sainte-Isaure and rue Lefort, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.
Although Maurice Utrillo, the artist of Montmartre par excellence, spent his whole life painting the abutment, he very rarely represented the street where he was born. We do not know more than a few paintings that illustrate the rue du Poteau, here below another example, also painted around 1935, when the painter was fifty years old.
