Pandora and the Flying Dutchman is a film of Albert Lewin 1951 with leading roles in Ava Gardner and James Mason. Pandora is a mythical film, a masterpiece of cinema, almost dreamlike aesthetic. Albert Lewin was an esthete and lover of the arts of painting. Although the scenes were often nocturnal, the picture is beautiful with a harmonious and measured use of Technicolor. The story is just as beautiful, it is love that transcends time. The script, quite literary, written by Lewin himself was inspired by the myth of the Flying Dutchman, doomed to wander the seas for eternity, and the myth of Pandora. Ava Gardner is a breathtaking beauty of infinite elegance in her every move ; her voice is of an incomparable softness. True goddess personified, it helps, like the placid acting of the enigmatic James Mason, to give a mythological dimension to the film. Pandora is a beautiful film, elegant, captivating, shot in Spain in Tossa del Mar.
Man Ray, who was a friend of Albert Lewin, realized some sets for Pandora. He created particular chess pieces and several paintings seen in the film.
