Alain Carles (Perpignan, 1924 - Neuilly-sur-Seine, 2002) presented himself as "the most important collector of Mathieu's paintings". He was a director of companies that included Printemps. His wife, Michèle (Saint-Etienne, 1913 - Paris, 2019), née Dubeuf, was a pharmacist. Their Mathieu collection consisted of 20 paintings specially painted for the couple from 1976 to 1987. All of the Master's paintings were hung in their apartment in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The couple also had often signed drawings, all the medals created by the artist as well as most of the works on Mathieu in their first editions. A great friendship linked this couple of patrons to the Master of Lyrical Abstraction.
