It was in 1938 that André Lhote discovered Gordes in the Vaucluse region. He bought a house there and worked to revive the village, which became both a holiday destination for the artist and the subject of numerous gouaches, watercolors, drawings, and paintings.
Lhote also welcomed friends and students to Gordes until 1960, when, with regret, the painter was forced to sell his home.

Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and on the edge of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, the village of Gordes is perched on a rocky outcrop.
The rapières, northeast of Gordes, are rocks whose shapes appear to have been sculpted, with geometric blocks in layers called assiettes.
