“I continued to search for more internal images—less the visible, but rather what cannot be seen, the internal image [...]. Detaching oneself from reality and finding the true image.”
This Composition, created by Geer Van Velde in the early 1950s, perfectly illustrates the artist's words and is consistent with the stylistic continuity of his painting during this period. Driven by a desire to reduce color and space, as evidenced by the Ateliers series, Geer Van Velde's art consists of elements structured into segments that organize space into multiple planes.
Our painting is composed of various softened geometric shapes that echo a nuanced and delicate palette. The color range is predominantly cool (blues, grays, greens, mauves) warmed by warmer touches (pinks, ochres) and a few larger areas of yellow. The choice of soft colors responds to the shapes and lines of the composition and creates a balanced and harmonious rhythm.
In this complex and sophisticated arrangement, which may seem abstract at first glance, the figurative sources remain visible and are enough to suggest a seascape: a blue sky, a flag, sails, and ship funnels.
In this composition, Geer van Velde gives us his “inner vision” of the seascape, reminiscent of his childhood in Holland and his stays on the French Riviera, which he associates with the central theme of his works: the studio/ atelier
This painting exudes a silent and soothing atmosphere, where the balance between lines and colors creates the illusion of movement on the canvas.
