In 1948, André Lhote bought a house in La Cadière-d'Azur in the Var. It is a typically Provençal hilltop village surrounded by vineyards, opposite the village of Le Castellet. At La Cadière, the artist attracted his friends and pupils, as he had done earlier for the villages of Mirmande and Gordes, where he also owned property.
