This pastel and tempera painting by Jean-Michel ATLAN, dated 1959, is fully in keeping with the artist's late period, marked by powerful gestures and an almost totemic structuring of forms.
The surface is dominated by a network of thick, almost calligraphic black lines that outline and compartmentalize the space. These sinuous lines structure the composition into interlocking shapes, evoking anthropomorphic silhouettes, stylized animal figures, and archaic signs.
The use of pastel and tempera creates a matte, velvety texture with sometimes powdery transitions. The palette is rich and contrasting: deep reds, dark greens, bright yellows, blues, and off-whites contrast and complement each other. The flat areas of color are outlined in black, which intensifies their vibrancy. Earthy tones (ochres, browns, dark reds) dominate and reinforce the impression of a painting rooted in primitive symbolism.
In this work, a magnificent testament to the artist's creative achievement, ATLAN manages to combine dynamic shapes and colors with a profound sense of mystery.
